Proyek Penyu
Who We Are
We’re an all-female team of turtle fanatics, rangers and educators. We’re dedicated to the following causes:
Educating against headstarting practices within local the community & tourism industry
Advocating for sustainable turtle tourism
Protecting turtle nests on Gili Trawangan
Mission & Goals
Mission: Protecting local populations of sea turtles through community education, ethical tourism, and safeguarding natural habitats.
PRIMARY GOALS
Community Education & Turtle Rangers - Using bespoke training workshops to raise awareness with beach bars & local staff about sustainable mindsets for tourism interactions, turtles and nesting events & beach activities.
Create an Emergency Response Network for better communication on Gili T to alert rangers & trained volunteers to nesting activities (and injured/sick turtles)
Encourage Ethical Turtle-tourism - Breaking the narrative that Headstarting is an effective tool for population preservation. Explanations at releases, turtle talks, social media awareness and interactive education.
Highlight and monitor turtle nesting hotspots & key nesting beaches
Relocate ‘At-Risk’ nests threatened by trampling, beach development, and storm surges. Re‑bury in protected sand hatchery (3 temporary hatchery sites for now)
Natural hatching & advocating against headstarting, preserving nests in situ where possible, no long-term captive Hatchlings go straight to sea as long as ocean conditions allow it & resort light pollution is kept to a minimum.
Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose
What began as a passion project has evolved into something much more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. What sets us apart isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to learn, understand, explore, and educate with purpose at every turn.
