The story behind the pass
Born from the islands
GiliPass grew out of more than 20 years of living and breathing the Gilis - learning what's keeps people coming back, and watching these islands evolve. It's a curated collection of places and experiences we genuinely stand behind.
That said, curation always means choices, and the Gili Islands are far richer than any list. Some brilliant spots aren't here yet - and as we grow we hope to be able to accommodate more of them. But don't let that stop you exploring. The best discoveries are often the ones you stumble upon yourself.
What GiliPass does is give you a confident starting point - and a little more out of every place you visit along the way.
Island Roots
GiliPass isn’t just about saving money. It’s about discovering the Gilis the way they’re meant to be experienced - through real people, real places, and genuine local knowledge.
The Gili Islands have undergone huge change since the introduction of tourism some 30yrs ago. What started as a handful of local and overseas entrepreneurs coming together to build simple offerings for intrepid explorers, off the beaten track, has evolved to become one of SE Asia’s hottest tourist destinations - attracting roughly 1 million visitors a year, from every corner of the globe.
However, even today, the premise is the same as it ever was - chilled island vibes, no motorized transport, sun, sand, sea and fun. And it’s better than ever.
Whilst you visit, see if you can find one the Gili Islands’ local legends. Explore below.
Changing Tides
With the influx of tourists, the islands have seen development to meet these demands. And despite little oversight regarding island planning, the Gili Islands undoubtedly still retain their charm and tropical island feel.
As you approach by boat, you’re met with a largely green, low-lying landscape. There’s no huge buildings, there’s still vast amounts of vegetation, and there’s no cars or mopeds. Add to that the exceptional reefs that surround the three islands, and it’s no wonder people return year after year.
Some things have changed, of course - it’s no longer a difficult-to-reach spot reserved for backpackers wanting deserted beaches. But what it’s become instead offers so much more - more comfort, more choices, better accessibility, a huge range of activities to enjoy, and a buzzing and exciting food and drinks scene. Add to that it’s warm, safe, and friendly atmosphere, and it’s no wonder it remains one of the most desirable travel destinations - not only in Indonesia, but in the world.
To find someone who visited the Gili Islands and wasn’t left wanting more would be nigh on impossible. It’s rich diversity of cultures and experiences - all wrapped up in a beautiful paradisiacal setting - is something anyone with wanderlust will surely want to sample, at least once.
The Future Is Bright
Visitors love the Gili Islands now as much as they ever have done - wowed by the culture, the beautiful landscapes (both above and below the water), and the sheer quality of the experience as whole.
Yet with growing tourist numbers, comes some challenges. The Gili Islands are privileged to have many entities, individuals and businesses who support, push and encourage impactful sustainability and conservation, through ongoing projects and eduction.
We’re committed to that cause at GiliPass, and look to strengthen these efforts through our Gili Giveback program. Learn more.
