Who We Are
Gili Reef Guardians is a youth-led movement restoring Gili Air's coral reefs and ecosystems through Biorock technology, island reforestation, and ocean education - proving that real environmental change can start with young people and a small island.
How it started
What started as an idea between two 12-year-olds has grown into one of the Gili Islands' most inspiring environmental movements. Gili Reef Guardians is a youth-led initiative dedicated to protecting and restoring the natural ecosystems that make this corner of Indonesia so extraordinary.
What we do
Their work is hands-on and wide-ranging. Underwater, the team builds and maintains Biorocks - metal structures that use gentle electrical currents to accelerate coral growth and strengthen reef resilience against rising ocean temperatures. On land, they plant 1,000 trees a year, reforesting Gili Air to restore shade and biodiversity. In local schools, they run creative EcoGames programmes that teach the next generation about ocean conservation through play.
